Festivalgoers were treated to a bevy of collaborations on the second day of this year’s Gathering of the Vibes. The String Cheese Incident were the night’s biggest offenders, as they welcomed David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Infamous Stringdusters banjoist Chris Pandolfi and fiddler Blaine Sprouse for a tribute to Old and In The Way (Rowan and Grisman were both members of the famed bluegrass quintet, which also featured the Jerry Garcia). SCI and their guests put their spin on most of Old and In The Way’s self-titled 1973 album, as well as tunes like “Catfish John” and “Ripple.” SCI followed the collaboration with a second set of their own material that also featured appearances by virtuoso drummer Kenwood Dennard (“‘Round The Wheel”) and Landolfi (“Restless Wind”).

Gregg Allman preceded Cheese with a jammed out set that turned into something of an Allman Brothers Band reunion when ABB guitarist Derek Trucks and drummer Jaimoe—both of whom were on site with other projects—took the stage for “Southbound” (ABB percussionist Marc Quinones was also present as a member of Allman’s solo band). Gregg introduced his friends before noting that the tune was a song by Mr. Dickey Betts.

Tedeschi Trucks Band also brought out their Wheels of Soul Tour companions Sharon Jones and Doyle Bramhall II for a quick Sly & The Family Stone tribute that featured takes on “Sing a Simple Song” and “I Want to Take You Higher.”

Later in the night, Electron celebrated Vibes’ 20th year with a full set of Pink Floyd covers that saw American Babies guitarist Justi Mazer sit in for the duration of the show.

Gathering of the Vibes continues today with sets from Wilco, Warren Haynes’ Seaside Allstars, Billy & The Kids, Warren Haynes & Railroad Earth, Greensky Bluegrass, Lettuce and many more.
