After taking “Kill Devil Falls” deep on night one of their Atlanta run, Phish obliged once again on the finale of the two-night run, delivering a “Tweezer” that will surely stand up next to all of the standout versions played over the course of the band’s career.

The night started, however, with an exceptionally clean and cohesive first set, with each member of the quartet showing off all they had to offer. From the opening notes of “Runaway Jim,” the band was off and running as they dipped into their bluegrass repertoire (“Nellie Kane”) as well as the newer “Blaze On,” “Halfway to the Moon” and “Ocelot.”

During “Heavy Things,” Trey Anastasio riffed on the “Happy Birthday” song, presumably a nod to Jerry Garcia’s birthday. The set closed with an energetic “Theme From the Bottom” and a frantic, yet straightforward, “Run Like An Antelope.”

As previously mentioned, the centerpiece of this show is the second set opening “Tweezer,” which stretched 26-minutes and featured Anastasio working his Mu-Tron effect throughout the first portion of the improv. Page McConnell then took over with Anastasio adding some rhythm before the guitarist once again grabbed control with some rapid-fire licks. Jon Fishman was relentless during the jam, expertly pacing it the entire time, refusing to let up.

The jam takes a darker turn for the last few minutes, with Anastasio and Gordon dabbling in some of the more delicate interplay they have shown off so far this tour before the group hit on more of a familiar muddy funk groove as Fishman sped up the pace of the jam. The home stretch of the “Tweezer” turned dark once again as the band muddied up the jam, dragging it into a perfectly placed “Waiting All Night.”

A particularly spirited “Backwards Down the Number Line” followed, once again a potential nod to Garcia’s birthday. “Carini” featured more dark jamming from the band. While not as extensive as the “Tweezer,” the song provided another standout moment before the band slipped into another breather, “Waste.” The group then closed the frame with a fiery “Sand” that led into “Tweezer Reprise.” A “Rock and Roll” encore was all that was needed to cap the standout two-night run.

Phish’s tour continues tonight as they remain in the South to play Tuscaloosa, AL’s Amphitheater.
