Phish’s Merriweather Post finale began how the previous night ended, with the band stepping out and playing a bit of “Sleeping Monkey” before launching into “Golgi Apparatus.”

The band then went on to deliver a well-played set that featured a more restrained take on “Undermind” before a rocking “Julius” that showcased Page McConnell and Trey Anastasio delivering some solid interplay, as they would later on in the set during “Possum.”

The big bustout of the night came in the form of “Nothing,” which hadn’t been played since June 7, 2012. The bustout preceded a trio of jams, in “No Men in No Man’s Land,” “Stash” and “David Bowie” before the group brought it to a close with “Possum.”

For their final frame, the band played a series of jam vehicles that fizzled out before they could see their full potential. On the opening “Disease,” the quartet landed on a tight groove that ended when Anastasio kicked into “Slave to the Traffic Light.” The well-played “Slave” featured more confident playing from the guitarist before the group went into another jam vehicle, “Light.”

Again, the group found themselves wading into the deep end on the “Light” jam before Anastasio called for “Twist,” which would trigger the ending run to the set that included the return of “Shine a Light,” another “Fuego” and the return once again of “Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley.” A “You Enjoy Myself” complete with an Anastasio/Gordon face-off jam with both musicians standing on Fishman’s drum riser, brought the set to a close.

After some words to the crowd from Anastasio about their connection to Merriweather Post, the band kicked into “Backwards Down the Number Line,” bringing the night to a close.

Phish will return to the stage this weekend as they kick off their tenth festival, Magnaball.
