Allman Brothers Band drummer Butch Trucks has put together a new band and they will play select dates this fall. Butch Trucks and the Freight Train Band features Trucks, bassist Berry Oakley, Jr.—the son of the Allman Brothers Band’s founding bassist—and a rotating mix of guests.

On August 21, the ensemble performed at Huntington, NY’s The Paramount with former Gregg Allman keyboardist Bruce Katz as well as Trucks’ son Vaylor on guitar. Freight Train offered a mix of Allman Brothers Band staples and covers that felt inline with the ABB ethos.

Up next, Trucks and Oakley will head south for two shows Florida. They will headline Bradenton, FL’s Aces Lounge on September 18 with guitarist/singer Damon Fowler, guitarist Thorson Moore and keyboardist Matthew Frost, and on September 19 they will play Boca Raton’s The Funky Biscuit with Flower and keyboardist Al Poliak.

Trucks recapped his summer in a Facebook post saying, “Wow. What a trip back to the states. Great gig with Great Caesar’s Ghost at Stephen Talkhouse in the Hamptons. Then an incredible set with Les brers (Oteil, Marc Q, Jaimoe, Jack Pearson, Pat Bergeson, Bruce Katz , Lamar williams, Jr and the amazing Bill Evans) at The Peach Fest. Then an EPIC Roots Rock Revival. Check out the FB page and the web site. Watch the web site as this year’s stuff is being added. ATM most of what we did is on FB and U-Tube. I Love you all. Forgot. Then Vaylor (my son), Bruce Katz and Berry Oakley, Jr. Played the world premiere of Butch Trucks and The Freight Train Band ( with the help of Heather Gillis and Lara Cwass) at The Paramount Theater, Huntington, Long Island. Incredible (love that word when it’s applicable) ending to the trip. Safely back at Mas Les Baux, Monblet, France and getting ready for another short run in Florida in two weeks (plus another show with Great Caesar’s Ghost). Again, Thanks to everyone that was involved in all of the shows, especially the teachers and students at RRR. I love you all.”
