In a new interview with the New York Daily News, Keith Richards took aim at several topics, most notably the current state of rock music as well as his thoughts on rap music in general.

“It sounds like a dull thud to me,” Richards said of rock music these days. When he moved to the metal genre, the guitarist noted two bands saying, “Millions are in love with Metallica and Black Sabbath. I just thought they were great jokes.”

After that, he moved on to his thoughts on rap music, commenting that there are “so many words, so little said.” He continued, “What rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there,” he says. “All they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another.”

These comments come on the heels of Richards giving his thoughts on The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s album. The guitarist called the effort a “mish mash of rubbish” and said he thought the band “got carried away.”

Richards also addressed his current drug use, saying he sticks to pot these days as “just a lift.” He added, “It gives you a slightly different perception of your surroundings. To me, pot is just fun. And I’m glad to see the rest of the country is coming around to my way of seeing things.”
