New York alt-jam band RANA reunited for their first official performance in five years on Monday night. The show took place at Brooklyn, NY’s Threes Brewing as part of Joe Russo’s residency at the new event space. With the exception of a surprise show in late 2013 at Brooklyn, NY’s Freddy’s Bar Back Room during Russo’s birthday party, the group has not performed in public since 2010. However, all four members of RANA participated in a sing-along based around “I Shall Be Released” during a The Last Waltz tribute at _Port Chester, NY’s Capitol Theatre last November.

Formed in Princeton, NJ, RANA—guitarist Scott Metzger, bassist Andrew Southern, drummer Ryan Thornton and keyboardist Matt Durant—served as one of the Wetlands’ house bands in its later years and also had close ties with Phish lyricist Tom Marshall. (Both Metzger and Southern were members of Amfibian.) Metzger currently plays with Nicole Atkins and Joe Russo’s Almost Dead and leads WOLF! Thornton performed in the indie-rock groups Sam Champion and Sean Bones and Durant records as Matt Trowbridge.

Monday’s show opened with an all-improv performance from Russo, Metzger and Antibalas/Superhuman Happiness/Arcade Fire saxophonist Stuart Bogie. Bogie also joined RANA for One “Dear Son” and “We Will Not Be Lovers” during their set.
