For the upcoming Peanuts movie, the iconic voice of the teacher, Miss Othmar, will be played by none other than Trombone Shorty’s trombone.

Lee Mendelson, the producer behind the first Peanuts television specials, tells Mashable about the genesis of the now famous voice, saying that it came out of both a desire to not show any adults and musical director Vince Guaraldi’s genius idea to put a trombone player in the studio.

For the new movie, director Steve Martino naturally brought in Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews to fill in the teacher’s vocal shoes. Andrews brought in a “little arsenal” of plungers and mutes to attain the perfect sound, which he used to give brassy voice to actual lines written for the teacher’s character.

You can experience the transformation yourself by visiting the movie’s promotional Wah Wah Machine website, which turns typed words and phrases into Trombone Shorty-intrepreted lines. Relive the original voice for Miss Othmar below.
