In an interview ahead of Tool’s appearance at Monster Mash Music Festival in Tempe, AZ, frontman Maynard James Keenan had some less than kind words for the fans of the band as well as his status in the group.

When asked about the humor in Tool’s records, writer David Accomazzo notes that a “hint of exasperation creeps into his voice.” Keenan responds, “Yeah, it’s there. But people miss it because they’re so focused on the other bullshit. It’s lost. Insufferable people. It’s just ridiculous, retards. I’m sorry. Can’t help them. Way too serious. Too much. Lighten up.”

While most of the piece focused on his Puscifer project and his foray into the wine business, when asked if he had to corral the other band members to play their only show of 2015, Keenan said, “No, they had to con me into it.”

As for the next Tool record? After a vigorous head shake, Keenan says, “There’s nothing to say. I can’t.”
