The New York Post is reporting that Madison Square Garden has entered the sweepstakes to throw a major music festival, as the company has requested permission from the city to put on a major music festival in Queens in June.

MSG’s proposal includes Irving Azoff as the driving force behind lining up acts, with the festival slated to take place June 24-26 with a free Queens community celebration on June 18.

The move puts them in direct competition with AEG, the producer behind Coachella and other major festivals around the country. The LA-based company has also put in a request to stage a music festival in Queens at the same time and on the same site, Flushing’s Corona Park.

This adds to an already controversial situation, as the Governors Ball Festival has started a petition to boycott the festival and urges the mayor to reject the proposal.
