Medeski Martin & Wood drummer Billy Martin has created a Kickstarter campaign for his new project, a movie called Art Drug that focuses on the music and art scene in downtown New York in 1987.

Martin refers to the project as his “dream film,” and in the campaign video he calls it maybe one of the most important projects he’s ever worked on. Rewards for various levels of contributions to the campaign include signed memorabilia, drum lessons from Martin himself, exclusive movie screenings and private concerts.

Now, most of you know me as an advocate for creativity. This film is about a creative community that was and still is very special to me. It’s where I really ‘found myself’ and where I finally felt at home as a twenty-something. There were many people during that time (late 1980’s into 90’s) that gave me reason to keep going and find my own voice. They were nurturing, radical experimentalists against all odds. Some of those mentors, peers and collaborators are reading this right now because I stay in touch. I will never forget this incredible life-changing Downtown community of artists, poets, filmmakers and musicians.
