Every year since 2005, Relix has partnered with Del McCoury to present a special Thanksgiving Weekend music package. Over the years we’ve offered live cuts, studio favorites and even some unreleased material. (We were proud to debut the bluegrass icon’s collaboration with Preservation Hall Jazz Band a few years back.)

Today’s Cold Turkey Thanksgiving kicks off with a preview of the Del McCoury Band’s 2016 plans—a version of “Californy Gold” from the bluegrass group’s forthcoming Woody Guthrie Project. (The album is slated for release this March.) The playlist then shifts back to the present for a selection that spotlights McCoury’s current tour with his old pal David Grisman, a version of “Dark Hollow” recorded at Cumberland, MD’s DelFest, and a classic Del McCoury Band take on “Smoking Gun” from the same festival. Making this year’s Cold Turkey Thanksgiving a true family affair, this year’s special closes with a Grateful Dead-approved segue from “Loser” into “Cumberland Blues/Cumberland Gap” by The Travelin’ McCourys. The latter songs were recorded just last week at Madison, WI’s Majestic Theatre.

Del McCoury Band will kick off a West Coast run at Mill Valley, CA’s Sweetwater Music Hall on December 4.
