My Morning Jacket hosted the second show of their four-night stand at New York’s Beacon Theatre last night. Much like Tuesday night’s performance, My Morning Jacket focused on their swampy, slower, psychedelic material earlier in the night, before digging into their more high-energy more, newer anthems. (MMJ frontman Jim James announced before the run that the group will not repeat any songs during their residency, allowing them to dig a bit deeper into their catalog each night.)

Folk-rock project Stand Of Oaks opened the night and My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel emerged during their support slot for a psych-rock jam. Then, MMJ opened their extended single-set performance with The Tennessee Fire song “The Dark,” which set the mood for the first part of the evening. From there they moved into another early favorite, the Heartbreakin Man EP track “Tonite I Want to Celebrate With You” and then, shifted to the present for sing-alongs such as “Believe (Nobody Knows),” “First Light” and the Z single “Off the Record.”

The meat of the set included chunky numbers like “War Begun” and the climax “Phone Went West,” but the group offered some less expected moments, too. Earlier on they nodded to Jim James’ recent Bob Dylan cover projects with a take on “Nothing to It” from The New Basement Tapes. (MMJ’s only previous stop at the Beacon was for a Dylan tribute in 2007.) The band also brought Stand of Oaks founder Timothy Showalter out to sing on “Wonderful (The Way I Feel)” and dusted off the rarely played Circuital tune “You Wanna Freak Out” for the first time since a December 27, 2012 performance at Port Chester, NY’s Capitol Theatre. Later in the night, they also busted out another Circuital song, “Movin Away,” for the first time since a December 29, 2012 Cap stop, and the band showed off their version of the James solo number “State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U.).” Curiously, MMJ has yet to play any of their traditional covers this run, though they have nodded to their various solo projects.

My Morning Jacket’s Beacon run will continue tomorrow.
