Warren Haynes and company kicked off his annual Christmas Jam weekend last night with the Pre-Jam at The Orange Peel in Asheville, NC.

Haynes started things off solo with “Railroad Boy” and “Old Friend” and sat down for an interview before Drivin’ N Cryin’ took to the stage. Their two-song set ended with a fire alarm evacuation of the venue, but the show went on.

Next up were ChessBoxer, the string outfit that has been touring with Haynes and drummer Jeff Sipe for his Ashes & Dust shows. The group ended their portion with “Bacon,” which they recently performed in the Relix office.

Asheville native Larry Rhodes then took to the stage for two tunes before ’80s-bluegrass-covers pioneers Love Canon came out for a set that included Dire Straits’ “Money For Nothing” and Kenny Loggin’s “Danger Zone.”

Haynes’ protege and guitar phenom Marcus King brought his band out for a longer set that welcomed Haynes himself to the stage, along with Craig Sorrells and Mike Barnes.

Haynes then closed out the night with his Ashes & Dust Band (Sipe and ChessBoxer), playing several tunes from the album of the same name and finishing the performance with an encore of “Two of a Kind Blues” with Barnes and Sorrells helping out.

The Christmas Jam weekend continues today with the Jam By Day featuring ChessBoxer and Drivn’ N Cryin’s Kevn Kinney and the Jam proper tonight, featuring Haynes, Tedeschi Trucks Band, The Doobie Brothers, Dawes, Hot Tuna, Bruce Hornsby and more.
