For the first time ever, Phish performed in Mexico last night, kicking off their three-night residence at the Barceló Maya Palace Deluxe in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Fans gathered on an ocean-hugging, palm tree-lined beach for a night filled with beach-themed songs, covers and a tribute to a lost legend.

The quartet started things off with a very appropriate set one opener, “A Song I heard the Ocean Sing,” before bringing out the first of several covers on the night, Clifton Chenier’s “My Soul.” The following “Martian Monster” fit the alien-looking lights on the water and sky.

The opening set also included lyrically-appropriate tunes like “The Wedge” and “Theme From the Bottom,” which Trey Anastasio dedicated to the fans watching the show from the paddle boards, floats and inner tubes in the ocean (which was being impressively illuminated by Umphrey’s McGee’s lighting designer Jeff Waful). “Ya Mar,” a song Mike Gordon picked up while on a family beach vacation years ago, also fit the mood, while “Fuego” was a nod to the band’s first show in this Spanish-speaking country.

Phish closed out the first frame with an expected tribute to a late legend, a solid rendition of “David Bowie” that included a jazzy-turned-rocking jam. Watch a video of the final three set one songs, including that “Bowie,” above.

The band immediately kept the theme going in set two with the Who’s “Drowned,” which they hadn’t played since October 22, 2014. The mostly-seamless set also included the appropriately-titled “Sand” which extended into two heavy jams that gave way to an equally heavy “Ghost” as the rain was falling on both the band and the fans.

The midpoint of the second set brought on “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” or “2001,” which led into the closing trio of live staples “Wolfman’s Brother” and “Possum,” with a set-closing cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Shine a Light.” The quartet came back onstage for the last cover in a night filled with them, Velvet Underground’s “Rock and Roll.”
