Phish closed out their three-night run in Mexico with a quote heavy set and by teasing their next studio project.

The group kicked things off with the highly anticipated “Mexican Cousin,” their first since November 2, 2014, and moved into another song left on the shelf for all of 2015, “The Curtain With.”

Later in the set, the band paused while Mike Gordon’s bass tech came onstage to fix a sound problem before “Yarmouth Road.” Trey Anastasio took the opportunity to thank the band’s crew and briefly discuss Phish’s forthcoming album. He mentioned that after their destination event in Mexico, they were going to return to writing and recording.

The band spent time with Fuego producer Bob Ezrin in late 2015 and have tested out a handful of new songs on the road since July. (Ezrin tasked the band with listening and learning some gospel and bluegrass cuts before returning to the studio.) Many audience members also used “Bathtub Gin” as an opportunity to splash in the ocean. Additional first set highlights included a rare take on “The Landlady” as well as a closing combo of “The Moma Dance” and “Saw It Again.”

The group opened their second set with a long “Down with Disease” that contained numerous vocal quotes from “Shipwreck,” a song the band debuted during their Chilling, Thrilling Sounds set on Halloween, but haven’t touched since. They continued to quote the song throughout the second set, giving the segment location-appropriate theme.

At the end of the night, they debuted a page McConnell-sung version of Led Zeppelin’s “The Ocean” during their encore. Phish has teased the song in the past and Trey and Mike have played it with GRAB.

After playing their most January shows ever this month, Phish will break from the road with dates yet to be announced.
