Mickey Hart shared his memories of the late Paul Kantner, who passed away yesterday at the age of 74. In a message posted on his Facebook page, the Grateful Dead percussionist called Kantner the “backbone” of Jefferson Airplane. He added, “I don’t think he got the credit he deserved.”

Kantner died yesterday at 74 after suffering a heart attack earlier in the week. He previously had one in March. Kantner’s publicist confirmed that the cause of death was multiple organ failure and septic shock.

He was kind of the backbone of that band. It was always about Grace and Jack and Jorma (Kaukonen), I don’t think he got the credit he deserved. And they were powerful. They could blow the Grateful Dead off the stage at times. We always played really well when we played with the Airplane.
