Last night in Los Angeles, Lionel Richie was honored as the MusiCares Person of the Year. As Billboard reports, the event raised more than $7 million, marking a record for the event.

Among those who showed up to pay tribute to Richie were the likes of Lenny Kravitz, who kicked off the night with a take on “Running with the Night.” Budding country star Chris Stapleton sang “Lady,” Rihanna made an appearance on “Say You Say Me” and The Roots led an all-star medley of Richie’s hits with the help of Pharrell and others.

Also appearing was Stevie Wonder for a touching rendition of “Three Times A Lady.” Dave Grohl also paid tribute to close friend Richie with “You Are” after telling a story about the muffin basket Richie sent to Grohl’s home following his on-stage fall that resulted in a broken leg. The Foo Fighters frontman, who was walking without a boot or crutches, said that while he didn’t bring Richie a muffin basket, he did bring this particular performance.

Richie’s friend Kevin Spacey presented the award at the end of the night. The singer thanked his bandmates in the Commodores, who he reportedly said, “are still my brothers.” Richie closed with, “Today I’m standing here celebrating all the songs they told me would ruin my career.” He added, “But the most important part of this evening is that we’re not celebrating me. We’re celebrating your generosity. We are our brother’s keeper.”
