Last week and over the weekend, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead brought their high-energy Grateful Dead cover act to the Northeast, playing four shows in four states over the course of four nights, all with bassist Jon Shaw, who is currently replacing regular bassist Dave Dreiwitz, who is on tour with Ween.

The run featured the usual deluge of Grateful Dead favorites, with a large amount of teases tossed in to the setlists. One of the highlights of the weekend came on Thursday at College St. Music Hall in New Haven, CT, when the band was joined by multi-instrumentalist Stuart Bogie, who plays with Antibalas and Superhuman Happiness and has collaborated with the likes of Arcade Fire, Dr. Dog, TV On the Radio and more.

Bogie came onstage for several tunes in the first set including “The Eleven,” “St. Stephen,” “Let It Grow” and an “Eyes of the World” that featured a tease of Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” The set ended with Bogie playing clarinet and bass harmonica on “Cumberland Blues,” a portion of which can be viewed in the video above. The set closer featured a tease of Aaron Copeland’s “Hoedown.”

The second set featured Bogie on just one tune, when he brought out his clarinet for “King Solomon’s Marbles.” The band then came back onstage with Bogie for an tease-heavy encore of “Going Down the Road Feeling Bad” that included snippets of “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” “Wipeout” and The Doors’ “LA Woman.” See the full setlist from Thursday below.

Almost Dead’s next schedule appearances will come in the form of a three-night stand at Brooklyn Bowl on March 24–26.
