Last night at New York’s Carnegie Hall, Philip Glass hosted the 26th Annual Tibet House Benefit Concert, and the headlining performance of Iggy Pop featured a couple tributes to his longtime friend, the late David Bowie.

After the traditional Tibetan monk chant to kick off the evening, Philip Glass spoke of the international aspect of the night’s lineup, including the monks, Gambian musician Foday Musa Suso, Canadian Basia Bulat, FKA twigs from the UK, Ukrainian-born Gogol Bordello frontman Eugene Hütz and more.

The night also featured Sharon Jones backed by Patti Smith Group, a change from her usual Dap-Kings backing group, who helped the singer bridge the gap between her funky soul and their rock-and-roll.

Pop began his headlining slot with two spoken-word pieces with first Suso and Glass, then the Scorchio Quartet, before playing Bowie’s “Jean Genie” with members of the Patti Smith Group. Pop later introduced his second Bowie tribute, “Tonight,” by noting that Bowie co-wrote the song, which ended up on Pop’s iconic Lust For Life album and later on a Bowie single which featured Tina Turner. “I was lucky enough to record it first,” Pop says. Soon after beginning the song, Pop brought out Jones to help out on Turner’s vocal parts, and eventually everyone from the benefit came out to close out the tune. Watch the performance above.
