The New York Attorney General, Eric T. Schneiderman, has released his findings in a multi-year investigation into the ticket industry in New York and the growing problem of consumer difficulties in finding affordable tickets to entertainment events.

In the press conference, which can be viewed above, Schneiderman reveals the investigation’s findings that two ticket brokers in particular, MSMSS, LLC and Extra Base Tickets, LLC have been operating without a reseller license and will face financial penalties.

The investigation, which was launched in response to several consumer complaints, also found that half of all tickets to popular events are reserved for “industry insiders” and pre-sale events.

On the topic of price gauging, the A.G. found that companies like Ticketmaster added fees to their tickets that “added more than 21% to the face price,” and that third-party sellers like StubHub had average margins of 49 percent above face value, and some of the brokers were using illegal “ticket bots” to buy up as many tickets as possible when they went on sale.

“Ticketing is a fixed game,” Schneiderman says. “My office will continue to crack down on those who break our laws, prey on ordinary consumers, and deny New Yorkers affordable access to the concerts and sporting events they love. This investigation is just the beginning of our efforts to create a level playing field in the ticket industry.”
