Umphrey’s McGee’s spring tour opener at The Hive in Sandpoint, ID featured a special twist as the group opted for a songlist instead of a setlist for both sets.

Among the highlights were an expansive first set “Utopian Fir” that stretched to 19 minutes and featured a snippet of Led Zeppelin’s “The Ocean” early on. The first set was also peppered with rarities like “Out of Order” and “Thin Air” as well.

The second set opened with a rare “Mantis Ghetts” before leading into the title track from their 2009 effort Mantis which featured a lyrical Jimmy Stewart in a rare moment of improv for the tune. During the Raw Stewage cut “Amble On,” Jeff Grady, the owner of the venue, sat in on percussion before the band moved into the ending section of “Mantis.”

Umphrey’s McGee’s tour continues tonight at the Moore Theatre in Seattle.
