Joe Russo’s Almost Dead continued their run at Brooklyn Bowl last night with their second of three shows at the venue where they first formed in 2013. The band was joined by a horn section borrowed from Brooklyn-based afrobeat collective Antibalas.

The horn players, Stuart Bogie, Martín Perna, Eric Biondo and Ray Mason, came onstage for almost all of the first set, which included a horn-appropriate opening cover of Otis Redding’s “Hard to Handle” along with Grateful Dead favorites like “Franklin’s Tower,” “Help On the Way” > “Slipknot!” and an “Althea” that featured a flute solo from the horn section. The set was finished off with a heavy “The Other One” that led into the set break.

The band came out for the second frame with a couple tunes without horns, “Cream Puff War” and an “I Need a Miracle” that got the crowd singing along in earnest. The Antibalas horns returned to the stage for the set-closing run of “Terrapin Station” > “Dancing in the Streets” > “Cumberland Blues” before the collective rounded out night two with an encore of “Sugar Magnolia/Sunshine Daydream.”
