The Avett Brothers made their debut last night at New York’s Madison Square Garden with a career-spanning show that featured two nods to the late great Merle Haggards and an appearance from opener Brandi Carlile.

After kicking off the night with the New York-referencing “Talk on Indolence,” the band jumped into their set that featured Avett classics like “Paranoia in B-Flat Major” and “Die Die Die,” plus two Haggard tunes, “Mama Tried,” which can be viewed above, and “My Favorite Memory,” which was followed by Doc Watson’s “Country Blues.”

The Brothers also brought out concert opener Brandi Carlile for a intimate, one-guitar and one-microphone trio rendition of “Murder in the City,” which can be viewed below along with encore closer “I and Love and You,” which bookended the performance with another New York-referencing tune.

The Avetts will continue their tour tonight at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY.
