As expected, the tributes to the late music icon Prince rolled in last night as news about his passing spread throughout the world. Among them, a pair of covers from Umphrey’s McGee and The Disco Biscuits as well as a slew of homages from Pink Talking Fish and an emotional speech and performance from Pearl Jam in Columbia, SC.

For starters, Umphrey’s McGee visited Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, OK last night for the first time since 2012 (eerily enough, that was the night Band drummer Levon Helm passed away) and delivered a cover of Prince’s “When Doves Cry” out of “The Triple Wide” to start the second set. Meanwhile at Terminal West in Atlanta, The Disco Biscuits kicked off their Sweetwater 420 pre-party show with “Let’s Go Crazy.” Both bands have performed these covers before.

Meanwhile at Nectar’s in Burlington, VT, Pink Talking Fish sprinkled in some Prince tunes along with their usual Pink Floyd, Talking Heads and Phish repertoire. Among the songs performed included “1999” (which Phish has covered) as well as a closing rendition of “Purple Rain” delivered by pianist Richard James.

Further south in Columbia, SC, Pearl Jam was reacting to the news on stage, first with a lengthy speech by Eddie Vedder early on in the show.

“That guy loved music so damn much,” Vedder said. “He was dripping with songs.” The frontman went on to add that “if there’s anyone that I thought would still be playing when he was 80 or 85, it was going to be him, so today is a real shock.” Vedder closed the speech with, “Prince was probably the greatest guitar player we’ve ever seen” before raising his wine bottle to the sky.

To close out the band’s show with “Yellow Ledbetter,” guitarist Mike McCready added a bit of Prince’s “Purple Rain” to bring the show to a close as purple lights covered the stage. Watch that performance below.
