After debuting a cover of “Heroes” last weekend to remember the late David Bowie during the first weekend of Coachella, LCD Soundsystem came back last night in Indio, CA, to honor another lost legend, Prince, who passed away earlier this week.

In a set that featured LCD staples like “Us V Them,” “Daft Punk is Playing at My House,” “New York, I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down” and show-closer “All My Friends,” along with the aforementioned Bowie cover, the band paid tribute to Prince with “Controversy,” the title track from his 1981 album. Earlier in the evening, singer Mavis Staples gave her own tribute to Prince with some words on her relationship with him and a brief cover of “Purple Rain.” “Yesterday, I lost a dear friend,” Staples said. “My son, and he was my angel. Talkin’ bout Prince, y’all, Prince!…He was the most beautiful spirit that I have ever met.” Staples also recounted Prince’s loyalty to her during her seven years on his Paisley Park label and the first time the two met at the side of the stage at a Staples Singers concert when she tried to “play it cool” but was overwhelmed and starstruck. “Cool went out the window,” she recalled.
