A report from the Minneapolis Star Tribune reveals the Prince passed away just one day before he was scheduled to meet with a doctor in an attempt to kick an addiction to painkillers.

Dr. Howard Kornfeld, an opiod addiction doctor who runs Recovery Without Walls in Mill Valley, CA, was called by Prince’s representatives on the night of April 20 because the musician was “dealing with a grave medical emergency.” Prince planned to fly out the next day, but was found dead in an elevator at his Paisley Park Estate.

Kornfeld sent his son, Andrew, to Paisley Park early Thursday morning. Upon his arrival, Prince could not be found. Kornfeld was one of three people in the estate when Prince’s body was found. Kornfeld was also the person who called 911.

An attorney for the Kornfeld family, William Mauzy, said that the hope was that Prince would agree to go to California for long-term care, including round-the-clock nursing support. Mauzy also noted, “The plan was to quickly evaluate his health and devise a treatment plan. The doctor was planning on a lifesaving mission.”
