Umphrey’s McGee took over Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas last night with their seventh annual UMBowl event, which featured four sets, or quarters, of new originals, bustouts, improvisation, special guests and plenty of audience participation.

The group kicked off UMBowl VII with a first-quarter “Raw Stewage” set that featured the band creating brand new original tunes out of fan-voted improvisations from past shows. First off was “Breaker,” which came from a January 2015 “All In Time,” then “Roctopus,” from a mixture of a 2005 “Pay the Snucka and a 2014 “In the Kitchen,” followed by “Fly Like a Beagle” and “Downtrodden,” taken from both a 2007 “Intentions Clear” and a 2011 “Nothing Too Fancy,” before the set was closed out by “Until We Meet Again,” which came from a 2014 “August.”

Quarter two consisted of an all-fan-voted setlist that lead with a run of four acoustic numbers. First off was Jake Cinninger solo on “Nopener,” then fellow UM guitarist Brendan Bayliss joined in on “Gulf Stream” and “Great American” before the two welcomed out Trey Anastasio Band member Jennifer Hartswick on vocals for “Bullhead City.” Percussionist Andy Farag replaced regular drummer Kris Myers behind the kit for “FF,” which segued into the debut original tune “Soul Food III.” For the following run of “1000 Places to See Before You Die” into “Alex’s House,” Cinninger took over drumming duties, while Hartswick and her TAB bandmate Natalie Cressman join in with horns and vocals, staying around to add their voices to the set-closer “Forks,” the first appearance of the tune since February 1, 2013.

After a third quarter of all improvisation, UM jumped into the final frame of UMBowl VII with a “Choose Your Own Adventure” set that allowed the audience to choose which tune the band played out of three choices presented. The quarter featured Hartswick and Cressman returning to the stage for “Ringo,” “Zappa” improv (with Cinninger leading the way, which fans chose over an improv of Mile Davis’ “Bitches’ Brew” and a “Tortoise” improv) and “Sledgehammer.” The fourth quarter closed out with a “Wizard Burial Ground” ending.

The band then returned to the stage for an “Overtime” encore that featured the first appearance of Hall & Oates’ “I Can’t Go for That” since June 4, 2011, a span of 524 shows before UMBowl VII rounded out with the ending of “All In Time.”

Umphrey’s McGee will play a second, regular show tonight on the Brooklyn Bowl Vegas stage.
