Dave Matthews Band celebrated their 25th anniversary with a pre-summer tour show in their hometown of Charlottesville, VA at the John Paul Jones Arena.

Serving as a fundraiser for the band’s BAMA Works Fund, the group hit the stage for a 22-song, career-spanning set that kicked off with a tune from their 1993 independent release Remember Two Things, “The Song That Jane Likes,” marking the first time the tune has opened a show since November 3, 1994. From there the group worked in cuts from 2001’s Everyday with “When the World Ends” as well as another RTT cut in “One Sweet World.”

The late LeRoi Moore was honored in the following “Why I Am,” which references the band’s original saxophone player. After “#41,” the band worked in the first of three song debuts over the course of the evening with “Samurai Cop,” a tune that saw Matthews utilize the electric guitar, something he did predominately on 2001’s Everyday and in a few songs that followed in the later years.

Another new acoustic song, “Bob Law,” was sandwiched in between two of the band’s singles from 1998’s Before These Crowded Streets and 1994’s Under the Table and Dreaming in “Don’t Drink the Water” and “What Would You Say.” A foray into 2002’s Busted Stuff (or The Lillywhite Sessions as well) came with “Big Eyed Fish” before the final new song of the night, “Bismarck.”

The final seven songs of the set kicked off with the first full version of “Sugar Will” since March 7, 2010, the only representation of the batch of songs written in 2004. A pair of newer songs followed in “Belly Belly Nice” and the setting-appropriate “Virginia in the Rain” which saw Matthews take to the piano.

From there, the band turned back the clock with “Warehouse” and then welcomed a longtime collaborator as John D’Earth joined Rashawn Ross and Jeff Coffin as a third horn player. Coffin, Ross and drummer Carter Beauford joined D’Earth earlier in the week at his weekly show at Miller’s bar in downtown Charlottesville which also featured previous DMB member Butch Taylor on keys. D’Earth stuck around for a lengthy “Jimi Thing” and a closing snippet of Prince’s “Sexy MF.” The main set closed with “The Space Between” and “Grey Street.”

The three-song encore saw the band bust out some of their heaviest live arrangements as Carter Beauford kicked things off with the iconic snare intro to “Ants Marching.” From there, the band dusted off Before These Crowded Streets rarity “The Last Stop,” which was last played in 2010 at the same venue, when the band closed out a run that also followed up with them taking a year off from touring, instead opting for the Dave Matthews Band Caravan stops. The show closed with a rendition of “Tripping Billies.”

Dave Matthews Band’s summer tour kicks off May 11 in Wichita, KS.
