With no bad weather to get in the way of music, Saturday at Hangout Festival started smoothly only to go awry later in the afternoon when the news came down that headliner Calvin Harris was forced to pull out of his set due to a car accident.

While Harris wasn’t seriously injured (he was taken to the hospital with a cut to his nose), he was unable to make it to Alabama and therefore left a gap at the end of the day. And with that, for the second straight day the team at Hangout Fest had to go to work on the schedule, altering the day’s performances which ultimately led to Panic! At the Disco moving into the final slot of the evening.

Earlier in the day, however, the first wave of music offered something for everyone as KOA brought its feel-good rock to the BMI Stage early in the afternoon. Meanwhile, the blues-tinged Record Company highlighted the Mermaid Stage inside of the Hangout restaurant with harmonica and guitar jams. To round it all out, reggae act Stick Figure and harder rock band Kaleo hit the stage as well.

As the afternoon progressed, X Ambassadors played to a lively crowd on the main stage, performing their hits like “Jungle” and “Renegades” as well as tunes they wrote with Imagine Dragons.

The BMI Stage boasted one of the best performances of the day as T. Hardy Morris of Dead Confederate and Diamond Rugs brought his band the Hard Knocks to the beach. Along with cuts from their 2015 effort Drownin’ On a Mountaintop, the group delivered a psychedelic cover of Neil Young’s “On the Beach” prior to closing their set.

Kurt Vile hit the stage in the early afternoon to a chilled group at the AXS TV stage, one of the two stages not located on the beach. “We love you, I’m Kurt Vile an these are my violators,” the former War on Drugs guitarist said to open his set. The chatter would be kept to a minimum as Vile and his band rolled through cuts from his latest b’lieve i’m goin down.

Later on the in the afternoon, Australian rockers The Griswolds owned the main stage with a devoted crowd and lively set that was capped with an appearance from members of Walk the Moon and Magic Man for a cover of Van Halen’s “Jump.”

The latter portion of the evening was highlighted by a pair of touring mates—Portugal. The Man and Cage the Elephant—and some hard rockers in The Whigs. First up on the main stage was the Alaskan weirdo rockers who, accompanied by a hype man, mixed snippets of covers into their already strong catalog. Among those, a glimpse of Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” out of “Atomic Man,” Pink Floyd’s “In the Flesh” in “All Your Light (Times Like These)” and a finale of “Plastic Soldiers” with a “Hey Jude” singalong to close the set.

Meanwhile, frontman Matt Shultz led Cage the Elephant through a relentless 13-song set that relied more on older material than it did on Tell Me I’m Pretty, mixing in tunes like “Back Against the Wall,” “Take It Or Leave It,” “Come a Little Closer” and of course, “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked.”

The night closed with sets from Miike Snow in the Boom Boom Tent, Leon Bridges closing down the BMI Stage with a sweet, soothing set as night fell, Nahko and Medicine for the People and Foals, who played opposite new-headliners Panic! At the Disco. The latter’s set mixed in their tunes along with covers of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long.”

Hangout Fest concludes today with sets from Bass Drum of Death, Run the Jewels, HAIM, Courtney Barnett, Florence and the Machine and more.
