In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the members of Dead & Company dished on a variety of topics including their upcoming summer tour, the conception of the group and what lies ahead, which may include some studio time.

On the upcoming run, Weir says the band “put a bunch of work into” rehearsals. “We built a band that is fun to play in – and more,” he added. The guitarist says that he expects to add at least 20 more tunes to the band’s repertoire, which topped out around 60 for their debut tour last fall. Among songs mentioned, “Passenger” and “Weather Report Suite.” Weir also says he’d like to work up the Phil Lesh-sung “Box of Rain,” adding that the “vocal register is right in John’s wheelhouse.”

Mickey Hart says that throwing John Mayer “into the Grateful Dead superstructure was a crapshoot” adding, “But there was magic and that trumps everything.” Bill Kreutzmann was also complimentary of the guitarist (who says his goal on the last tour was to “honorably introduce myself”), saying “John has a solidness about him. But he can go ‘out’ when it’s called for.”

As for Mayer’s plans on this upcoming run, the guitarist says he aims to prove “I can belong in this outfit.” He continues, “We’re going into rehearsal not to learn the songs again but to get that much more dialed in, so these concerts, as experiences and recordings, can live on some part of the Grateful Dead shelf.”

Weir also touched on the possibility of recording an album with the group, kicking around the idea of recording new material along with Dead songs that were never treated in the studio such as “The Other One” and “Dark Star.” “That would be something of an adventure,” the guitarist says. He admits however that the band does “need to put in another tour—or two” before the studio aspect can come into play.

Dead & Company kick off their tour June 10 in Charlotte, NC.
