My Morning Jacket returned to Red Rocks last night for the first of two shows that saw the group reunite with founding guitarist Johnny Quaid for the second time in recent memory.

Quaid came out on several tunes including a combination of “Steam Engine” and Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” for just the third time in the band’s history. Quaid also came out on the It Still Moves tune “Run Thru.” The guitarist then closed out his second stint with the band since Forecastle 2015 with a set-closing cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain.”

Quaid, who is also Jim James’ cousin, left the group in 2004 along with keyboardist Danny Cash, paving the way for Carl Broemel and Bo Koster to fill their respective roles.

Other tunes of note in the career-spanning, 27-song set include the first “Just One Thing” since 2013 as well as a guest spot from Fruit Bats’ Eric Johnson on “Wonderful (The Way I Feel),” a song he has played with the group before. MMJ also dipped into their cover repertoire with Erykah Badu’s “Tyrone,” which has been in sparse rotation for the group since 2000. It was last played at One Big Holiday in 2014.
