Many of the biggest names in music have signed a petition advocating Congress for reform of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, which regulates the circulation of copyrighted work. Among them, Ryan Adams, Jack White, Paul McCartney, Trent Reznor, Beck, The Black Keys, David Byrne, Pearl Jam, John Mayer, Bruce Hornsby and many others. View the full petition below.

“The Digital Millenium Copyright Act is broken and no longer works for creators,” the petition leads off. “The existing laws threaten the continued viability of songwriters and recording artists to survive from the creation of music. Aspiring creators shouldn’t have to decide between making music and making a living. Please protect them.”

One of the main goals of the petition is to force chance in YouTube policies, which allows users to post copyrighted content. The petition notes, “The [DMCA] was written and passed in an era that is technologically out-of-date compared to the era in which we live. It has allowed major tech companies to grow and generate huge profits by creating ease of use for consumers to carry almost every recorded song in history in their pocket via a smartphone, while songwriters’ and artists’ earnings continue to diminish.”
