Last night, Widespread Panic kicked off their three-night run at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the venue that has become synonymous with Panic’s summer tours. The show marked the band’s 53rd performance at the amphitheater and their 50th consecutive sold-out gig, for which they hold the Red Rocks record. Panic’s first show at the venue had them on a 1991 bill with Blues Traveler and Acoustic Junction.

Marking both their milestone sell-out performance and the 75th anniversary of Red Rocks, the band played both classic and new tunes, spanning from the first song they ever played in a show together, Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth,” all the way to “Steven’s Cat,” the lead single from their most recent album.

The band also nodded to the late Parliament Funkadelic and Talking Heads keyboardist Bernie Worrell, who passed away yesterday after a battle with lung cancer, by rounding out their second set with P-Funk’s “Red Hot Mama” in his memory. Worrell sat in with Panic in 2002 and 2003, playing the tune with them on both occasions.

Widespread Panic will continue their Red Rocks run tonight.
