Phish set their sights on the Northeast as their summer tour shifted to Philadelphia after a tour opening run in the Midwest. The quartet returned to the intimate Mann Center in Philadelphia for the first of two shows that saw them debut a new song, bust out an old ballad and yet again deliver an extended take on “Fuego” at the venue.

To start things off, however, Trey Anastasio kicked into the familiar opening riff of “Wilson” to set an energetic pace to the beginning of the first set. A “Funky Bitch” followed before an equally funky and frenetic “No Men in No Man’s Land.” After a welcome from the guitarist, who praised the Philadelphia venue, a laid back “Roggae” provided a breather from the fast-paced start before the band dipped into their bluegrass repertoire with “Nellie Kane.”

The rest of the first set was highlighted by the return of the delicate “Sleep Again,” not played since August 7, 2010 as well as the debut of a bluegrass-tinged song led by Page McConnell titled “Things People Do.” The first set closed with a dark, spacey yet brief “Split Open and Melt” as well as the familiar pairing of “Oh Kee Pa Ceremony” and “Suzy Greenberg.”

The seven-song second set was anchored by its opener, “Fuego,” stretching out to almost 17-minutes and joining the previous two versions of the song played at The Mann as standout versions. In 2014, the quartet stretched the then-new tune out to 25 minutes and did nearly the same the following year with a 17-minute version.

From there, the group dipped into rare second-set tunes like “Runaway Jim” and “Gotta Jibboo,” mostly found in the first set in the 3.0 era. The new song “Breath and Burning” got another spin, this time in the second set before the group transitioned to the frantic “Timber (Jerry).” A delicate landing into “Slave to the Traffic Light” set the stage for the “You Enjoy Myself” set closer that saw Anastasio hop on Jon Fishman’s Marimba Lumina for a drum jam towards the end of the tune. A “Quinn the Eskimo” encore brought the night to a close.

Phish return to The Mann tonight.
