Last night as his Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, CA, Phil Lesh played a surprise bar show with three-fourths of Neal Casal’s Circles Around the Sun, the band Casal brought together to create the interlude music for the Grateful Dead’s Fare Thee Well concerts last summer.

Lesh sat in on bass for Dan Horne, joining guitarist Casal, keyboardist Adam MacDougall and drummer Mark Levy for two full sets of music. Both hour-plus sets kicked off with jams that alluded to the Circles Around the Sun interludes before delving into some Dead live staples like “Peggy-O,” “Friend of the Devil,” “After Midnight” and show closer “Mission in the Rain,” among others. View the full setlist below.

The surprise show came after two straight themed nights of Phil Lesh & Friends playing Terrapin Room, a “Darkness” set on Tuesday followed by an “Ascending Into the Light” set on Wednesday. Lesh was joined both nights by Casal, Jackie Greene, MacDougall and Levy, plus Cass McCombs for the “Darkness” set, which featured “Dark Star,” “Black Muddy River” and “Uncle John’s Band,” along with covers of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and more. Nicki Bluhm joined the band the following night for the “Light” set, which included The Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun,” “Scarlet Begonias,” “Franklin’s Tower,” “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away” and more.
