After making their Fenway Park debut on Friday night, Dead & Company closed down their two-night residency at the famed Boston ballpark along with their east coast touring slate with a show heavy on appearances from Donna Jean Godchaux.

The show got started, however, with a patient rendition of “Truckin’” before the ensemble rolled into Johnny Cash’s “Big River,” a song the Dead covered nearly 400 times in their career dating back to 1970. Tonight’s version marked just the fourth Dead & Company performance of the tune.

Godchaux—who also joined the group at Fenway on Friday night—then emerged for the rest of the first set that included a tender “They Love Each Other” before the more energetic “Deal,” both led by John Mayer. A few other Donna staples this year with the band followed as “Bird Song,” “Passenger” and “Goin’ Down the Road Feeling Bad” brought the first set to a close.

The second set kicked off with more vocals from Godchaux as she joined the fold for the opening “Playin’ in the Band” as well as the following “Estimated Prophet” and an extended “He’s Gone” that slowly led into the Mayer-led “Sugaree.” While the transition to the tune may have been a bit sloppy, the “Sugaree” that followed erased any memory of the rough intro as John Mayer pushed the band to a spirited peak with his guitar work during the song before blending smoothly into “Fire on the Mountain.”

After a “Drums” segment that saw Oteil Burbridge stay on stage for a bit with Kreutzmann and Hart, the delicate “Days Between” gave way to an anthemic “Not Fade Away” (complete with another awkward, disjointed intro) that brought the set to a close. The band gave the crowd one more for the road as Weir led the customary “One More Saturday Night” encore closer.

Dead & Company return to the stage July 22 in Portland, OR.
