Phish closed out their run at the scenic Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington last night, as the band was tasked with following up one of the standout shows of the summer played on the opening night of the two-night stint.

While the totality of the show may not stack up to the previous night’s effort, the group did pepper the show with highlights like the opening “Buried Alive,” played for the first time since August, 15, 2015 and just the tenth in the modern era. Coincidentally enough, the performance marked a venue debut as it has never been performed at the Gorge.

The song-oriented first set also included the second “Sleep Again” of the tour after its return after six years on the shelf. The delicate “Driver” also returned for the first time since August 3, 2013 before the band signaled the closing run of the set with a funky “Sand” that saw Trey Anastasio and Jon Fishman lock into a tight funk groove.

After “Horn” and the Page McConnell-led “Halfway to the Moon,” Phish celebrated the sun setting with a “Bathtub Gin” that served as the centerpiece for the entire night, as the quartet patiently moved in unison to a thrilling crescendo before exiting the stage.

With the momentum from the thrilling “Gin” lingering through setbreak, the band came out with “Blaze On” that didn’t quite stack up to previous versions as the band teetered on Type II territory due in part to significant layering from Anastasio and McConnell before the guitarist called for “Backwards Down the Number Line.”

While “Number Line”‘s composed section seemed disjointed, the Type I jam that followed featured smooth, cohesive playing before the band found themselves in “Carini” which left as quickly as it arrived featuring very little improv.

“Wingsuit” came at an appropriate time on the eve of the final round of The Open Championship golf tournament in Scotland. The delicate “Shade” preceded the closing run of a standard “Mike’s Song,” “Farmhouse” and “Weekapaug Groove” that again came close to an extended jam with Anastasio looping his guitar riffs, creating a psychedelic landscape while Mike Gordon and McConnell complemented the jam. The Stones’ “Shine a Light” brought the set to a close.

Returning for the encore, Anastasio jumped on the drum kit and began the “Hold Your Head Up” drum beat while Jon Fishman took center stage. After the drummer, still in his Bernie Sanders-inspired dress, thanked the crowd and complimented the scenic venue, he joked there is only one song he can ever remember, Syd Barrett’s “Love You,” played for the first time since October 23, 2010. After a vacuum solo, Fishman ran around the stage, jumped on McConnell’s piano and danced while the band jammed the final section of the song.

Those thinking the show was over were in for a treat as Anastasio and Fishman returned to their normal stations and kicked into “Harry Hood.” The delicate, tender “Hood” jam was highlighted by Anastasio calling for Chris Kuroda to turn off the lights so the band could take in the Washington night sky. Mike Gordon accented the dark setting with some extra-terrestrial bass lines while the crowd lit up the sky with glowsticks as the quartet then built to a soaring conclusion on “Hood.”

Anastasio thanked the crowd for the run and seemed to be ending the show when all of a sudden he started the “Tweezer Reprise” riff, finishing out the tune that opened the previous night.

Phish will continue their summer tour tomorrow at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, CA.
