Umphrey’s McGee continued their summer tour with a stop at Asbury Park’s Stone Pony Summerstage and did so with a show highlighted by a pair of hard rock covers.

For starters, the group found their way out of a lengthy opening “Plunger,” landing on the first “Turn & Dub” of the year and first since March of 2015. After the newer “Loose Ends,” the band brought out Corey Frye from opening band The Main Squeeze to lead the group on a Black Sabbath segment that concluded with a take on “War Pigs,” their first since January 31, 2015.

The second set was anchored by a lengthy opening “Robot World” that included a lyrical “Jimmy Stewart” jam before the group found themselves in the metal-tinged “Hindsight” before the more delicate “End of the Road.”

The rest of the set alternated between heavy and light with songs like “Pay the Snucka” and the more dance-oriented “Miami Virtue” which both preceded the closing run of “Get in the Van,” “Ringo,” “Believe the Lie” and “Gulf Stream.”

For the encore, the band returned to debut a cover of Misfits’ “Last Caress” on the same stage where they debuted Danzig’s “Mother” in 2012. Coincidentally enough. Glenn Danzig will reunite with the Misfits this year to play Riot Fest.

Umphrey’s McGee’s tour will resume August 3 in Kansas City, MO.
