Phish wrapped up their summer tour with one of their most cohesive two-set shows of the summer as they returned to Chula Vista, CA’s Sleep Train Amphitheatre for the fifth time since 1999.

The first set was highlighted by a rare opening “Farmhouse,” the first time the tune has found itself in that spot since July 3, 2014. From there, the group opted for an early first set “Ghost” that still maintained all of the improvisational tendencies of a second set version of the song as Trey Anastasio grabbed ahold of the jam and took it to a sufficient peak.

The theme of the night would be Jon Fishman’s new song “Ass Handed,” which came next. Anastasio again remarked that he loves the new tune from the drummer and would go on to quote it at various points throughout the night, including after a standout pairing of “Martian Monster” and “Reba.”

One of the centerpieces of an already noteworthy first set came with “Tube,” which finally saw some improv come its way as the band stretched out the funk groove to the tune of a nine minute jam before finding their way into the equally funky “Wolfman’s Brother” complete with “California Love” teases prior to the “Walls of the Cave” closer.

The hits kept coming to start the second set as the group launched into the first second set opening “2001” since July 7, 2000. The spacey jam climaxed into a roaring “46 Days” led by Anastasio and Fishman once again before the improv-heavy combo of “Piper” and “Twist” anchored the second set.

The spring to the end of the set included “Backwards Down the Number Line,” “Carini” complete with more “Ass Handed” quotes as well as a sprawling and delicate “Harry Hood” before the “Loving Cup” closer.

For the encore, the group returned with Page McConnell’s favorite song (according to Anastasio), “Sleeping Monkey” before a rare “Tweezer Reprise” preceded by no “Tweezer” that was altered to include lyrics from “Ass Handed.”

Phish returns to the stage August 26 in Arrington, VA for their first of two shows at Lockn’ Festival.
