Ryan Adams appeared on KCRW earlier today to perform a few acoustic songs including “Lucky Now,” “New York, New York” and “My Winding Wheel” as he warms up for a pair of shows in California this weekend.

Adams finally confirmed what many have assumed in a brief interview, saying that there is in fact a new album coming soon. “There is an album,” he said before adding, “I don’t think I’ve ever worked on anything harder than this.”

Detailing the writing process (Adams said he is still working on the record), Adams noted that this is “probably the most songs I ever wrote for a record and all the different kinds of emotions that a person can have went into making it.”

“Whatever this process was was so cathartic in a way that I actually made songs where I would listen back to what I had to say and go, ‘That is really messed up’ or ‘There’s actual hope in there, what does that mean?’”

He added, “I feel like whatever I’m making bookends so much of what I’ve experienced in the last couple of years.”

Adams will perform with his band The Shining at the Santa Barbara Bowl on August 4 and the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles before appearing at Outside Lands.
