The nominees for Britain’s Mercury Prize have been announced, and topping the list are new albums by David Bowie and Radiohead, Rolling Stone reports. The Mercury Prize is given to the best British album of the year, as decided by a panel of critics and music industry members.

Bowie Blackstar, the final album to be released during his lifetime, and Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool are included in the 12-album shortlist for the prize, along with Bat For Lashes’ The Bride, The 1975’s I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it, Anohni’s Hopelessness, Savages’ Adore Life and more. According to the judges, a defining characteristics of the albums chosen was their ability to speak to the current state of the world. “This is music to make sense of our unsettling times – heartfelt, angry, thoughtful and thrilling,” they say in a statement. “The 2016 Hyundai Mercury Prize ‘Albums of the Year’ are marked by their musical ambitions, unexpected instrumentation and breathtaking arrangements.”

The 12 nominees will be cut down to six before deciding the winner, and for the first time, UK citizens have the chance to cast their vote to decide one of the six finalists. The award ceremony will take place on September 15 and will be broadcast live. Last year’s winner was Benjamin Clementine’s At Least For Now.
