Pearl Jam kicked off their Fenway Park run tonight in Boston, MA with a 30+ song setlist that saw them rely on members of the hometown baseball team at numerous points.

Before that, however, the group hit the stage just sort of sunset to a sold out crowd with more somber early cuts like the brooding “Release,” “Long Road” and a singalong in “Elderly Woman.” An energetic “Given to Fly” kickstarted the crowd at the ballpark before other reliable live tunes like “Why Go,” “Daughter” and “Even Flow” ushered in the dark of night.

Towards the end of the main set, the band welcomed out former Red Sox pitcher Bronson Arroyo to join them on acoustic guitar for “Black.” Arroyo, a musician in his own right, has covered the iconic Pearl Jam song routinely and has spent some time with Eddie Vedder during his time as a pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds.

The set continued with a more political twist as Vedder introduced the Bob Dylan cover of “Masters of War,” just the 17th ever and first since 2008. Jackson Browne’s “I Am a Patriot” followed, an appropriate choice given the Olympic ceremony taking place almost simultaneously in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Three tour debuts would follow in the closing twelve songs including “Strangest Tribe,” played for the first time since 2014. The Lost Dogs cut has only ever been played twice at a Pearl Jam show, with its live debut coming in Norway.

Later on, Vedder asked for a “uke” to be brought on stage, and former Red Sox player Kevin Youkilis (affectionately known as “Youk”) brought Vedder the tiny guitar of a similar name, much to the delight of the crowd. After the frontman used it for “Sleeping By Myself,” the rest of the band rejoined him to charge through the end of the first encore with classics like “State of Love and Trust” and “Corduroy” as well as Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb.”

The Boston references weren’t quite done on this night as Pearl Jam kicked off their four-song second encore with Aerosmith’s “Draw the Line” before moving into their hit “Alive.” Vedder then brought out Boston native and longtime Boston Globe sportswriter Peter Gammons on stage to take a bow. The two work together on the Hot Stove Cool Music charity concert along with former Red Sox GM Theo Epstein as a part of Gammons’ Foundation to be Named Later.

The show closed with a special dedication of the Beatles’ “I’ve Got a Feeling” to Pearl Jam fan Matthew Plummer, who requested the tune after the passing of his father. Vedder dedicated the song to Plummer, which was played for the first time since 2004, prior to the “Baba O’Riley” closer.

Pearl Jam return to Fenway Park on Sunday night.
