Umphrey’s McGee made their Ascend Amphitheater debut with a special show that included a mini-second set featuring the Nashville Symphony before a proper third set from Umphrey’s.

After a first set that included jam vehicles like “Bridgeless,” “Tribute to the Spinal Shaft” and “Utopian Fir,” the group returned with members of the symphony for five songs starting with a pair of newer tunes, “Deeper” and “Educated Guess,” before the second “Rocker” of the year. The Safety in Numbers cut has been played just six times since the album support tour in 2006.

The final two songs with the orchestra saw them add strings to the anthemic “Hajimemashite” and “Mantis,” the latter of which saw a rainstrom move through the area during the end of the song.

Umphrey’s McGee returned for a third set for a seven-song performance that included tunes like “Wappy Sprayberry,” “JaJunk,” “August” “In the Kitchen” and an encore cover of Zeppelin’s “Fool in the Rain.”

Next up for the band is a slot at Lockn’ Festival on August 25.
