Gov’t Mule continued their tour with Blackberry Smoke last night at Humphrey’s Concerts by the Bay in San Diego, CA, with a show that featured several sit ins from members of Blackberry Smoke and drummer Steve Ferrone of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.
After kicking off the night with Steve Millers “The Joker” and a run of Mule originals, Warren Haynes and company brought out Ferrone for three covers, as the Heartbreakers drummer replaced Matt Abts for Freddie King’s “Pack it Up,” Roy Hawkins-penned “The Thrill is Gone” and Ann Peebles’ “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home.”
The rest of the set included Mule’s nod to Prince in “When Doves Cry” intertwined with their own “Beautifully Broken” and a Beatles run of “She Said, She Said” into “Tomorrow Never Knows.”
The band would then return to the stage for a cover of Jerry Garcia’s “Loser” with Blackberry Smoke guitarist Charlie Starr and Richard Turner, who filled in for Jorgen Carlsson on bass. Their bandmate Paul Jackson then joined the band, along with Starr and Ferrone, for a night-ending cover of Little Feat’s “Spanish Moon.”
Gov’t Mule return to the stage tonight at Vina Robles in Paso Robles, CA.
