Fresh off their impressive two-night showing at Lockn’ Festival, Phish returned to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO, last night for the first of three shows at the venue and their annual summer tour finale run. The performance was a high-energy affair that featured two tour debuts and got the band off to a solid start to the weekend.

The first set opened in typical energetic fashion with “Ghost” and “No Men In No Mand’s Land” that allowed the band to stretch out a bit early in the night. Next was “Breath and Burning,” a newer tune that was debuted earlier this summer, before “Undermind” and “Heavy Things.” “Stash” led the quartet to riff on how they were really “swinging dicks,” which prompted a swing-style “Ass Handed.” After “The Wedge,” fans got their first tour debut of the night in “Alaska,” which hadn’t been played by the band in over two years, last seeing the stage on July 30, 2014. That song led into a set highlight of “46 Days,” which brought the first frame to a jamming close.

Set number two kicked off with “Run Like an Antelope” before the tour debut of the newer “Mercury,” which was debuted last summer but shelved this year. The song started off a seamless run into “Seven Below” into “Birds of a Feather” before a standalone “Wombat.” Anastasio then jumped into the intro riff to “Tweezer” with an envelope filter that muddied his tone just enough before the band came in to support a solid rendition of the live staple that featured a slow-burn jam that steadily built and led into “Runaway Jim” and a ripping “Suzy Greenberg,” which saw Anastasio move to the marimba lumina during Page McConnell’s keys solo and closed out the second set. The band then returned to the stage to give the customary “Tweezer Reprise” encore that was preceded by “Bug.”
