Iconic singer-songwriter Tom Petty has been named as MusiCare’s next Person of the Year for 2017. MusiCares is an organization that provides a network of aid for musicians in their times of financial, medical and personal need.
“I am so very pleased to be honored as the MusiCares Person Of The Year,” Petty says on his website. “I have so much respect for this organization, which really does care about the people in our industry. I myself know many people who MusiCares has aided in desperate situations. Again, let me say this is a true honor.”
The statement on Petty’s site also notes that the award is being bestowed upon the singer due to “his significant creative accomplishments, his career-long interest in defending artists’ rights, and the charitable work he has undertaken throughout his career, which has notably focused on the homeless population in Los Angeles.”
Petty joins past MusiCares Person of the Year recipients Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, Neil Young, Brian Wilson, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, David Crosby, Billy Joel, Quincy Jones and this past year’s winner, Lionel Richie, who was honored with a concert featuring the likes of Dave Grohl, Chris Stapleton, The Roots, Pharrell, Lenny Kravitz and more. Petty’s himself will be honored with an event on February 10 in Los Angeles, CA.
