Phish kicked off their fall tour last night with the first of two shows at South Carolina’s North Charleston Coliseum, bringing out three band debuts from their new album, Big Boat, and venturing into a couple extended jams.

The band wasted no time in jumping into the new record’s tracks as they opened up the first set with “Petrichor,” which comprises the thirteen-and-a-half minute final slot on Big Boat. The tune was a Phish debut, having been played by frontman Trey Anastasio previously when the guitarist toured with a backing orchestra in 2014.

Phish then went into a run of live staples in “Ghost” and “Heavy Things” before keyboardist Page McConnell led them through their live debut of “Home,” one of his contributions to the new album, with a solid bit of jamming near the end as was promised by the studio track. “Poor Heart” was followed by a strong “Bathtub Gin,” then bassist Mike Gordon led the way through his “555.” The first set was rounded out with “Horn” and the third and final album track debut of the night in “More.”

Set number two kicked off with a rousing “No Men in No Man’s Land,” a newer live staple that got the studio treatment in Big Boat. The seamless set then moved into “Down with Disease,” which featured one of the deeper jams of the night, before a cover of Talking Heads’ “Cities” saw Anastasio move to Jon Fishman’s marimba lumina as he did several times during this past summer’s tour.

The set moved on through “Roggae,” “Twenty Years Later” and “Light,” which was highlighted by an extended jam, a clip of which can be seen below courtesy of YouTube user kaleidosoundhead. The second set ended with a run of upbeat tunes, as “Free” led into a cover of “Boogie On Reggae Woman” and the set-closing “Harry Hood.” The band would then return to the stage for a three-song encore that started off slow with the understated “Winterqueen” before picking things up with “Tube” and closing the night out with the shuffling “Rocky Top.”
