Bob Weir celebrated his 69th birthday with a show at the Capitol Theatre that kicked off with a few acoustic tunes from Weir following the crowd serenading him with “Happy Birthday.”

Weir’s birthday would be at the forefront for most of the night, as he kicked off the night with “One More Saturday Night,” remarking that he ran out of time the previous night (Saturday night) to play the tune.

Throughout the night, Weir welcomed out guitarist Aaron Dessner, who performed the whole show with the band. Dessner was originally supposed to join the tour but pulled out at the last minute due to a family emergency. Another frequent guest throughout were Brooklyn pop-trio The Bandana Splits, comprised of Annie Nero (wife of Weir’s songwriting parter Josh Kaufman), Lauren Balthrop and Dawn Landes.

The Bandana Splits added background vocals to numerous songs in the first set, including “One More River to Cross,” “Darkest Hour,” “Lay My Lily Down,” “Ghost Towns” and “Gonesville.” Leslie Mendelson reprised her role as background singer on “Dark Hollow.” She would also reappear in the second set for “Mama Tried” as well as “Eyes of the World” and “Uncle John’s Band.”

Before the encore, the entire crowd received blue cowboy hats along with the band, as Weir was also presented with a blue cake for his birthday. The band played the encore in the cowboy hats, delivering “Ki-Yi Bossie” and the Dead’s “Brokedown Palace.”
