Phish kicked off their two night run at Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville last night, surprising everyone by inviting Bob Weir out on stage during the second set and encore. Weir is in town to perform at the Ryman Auditorium tonight in support of his latest Blue Mountain.
Before the Grateful Dead guitarist joined his Fare Thee Well bandmate and the rest of Phish, the Vermont quartet delivered a solid first set that touched on many upbeat, rocking tunes like the opening combo of “Chalk Dust Torture” and “Blaze On.”
The ever-elusive outdoor fall tour show was also treated to a first set “Ghost” before Page McConnell crooned away on “Lawn Boy” and Mike Gordon set the groove on “Halley’s Comet” which unfortunately gave way to “Sand” as quickly as it has been in the modern Phish era.
From there, it was time for a new tune, “Tide Turns,” the second of four Big Boat tunes on the evening, including a “Breath and Burning” that followed a rocking “46 Days.” A solid, well-crafted trio of “Limb By Limb,” “Cavern” and the rare “2001” set-closer wrapped up the first set.
While the second set was highlighted by Weir, Phish did kick it off with a few tunes of their own with “Julius” leading into “Fuego” and “My Friend, My Friend” before the group brought out Weir for their first collaboration in sixteen years. Weir last joined the band at Shoreline Amphitheatre in 2000.
Weir would join the band for the rest of the show, leading the quartet on “Samson and Delilah” (a Phish debut) as well as their own “Twist” before the final Big Boat tune of the night, “Miss You,” which saw Anastasio yield the lead vocals to Weir.
After the tender ballad, it was time for a reprise of one of the songs Weir and Phish played together in 2000, “West L.A. Fadeaway,” not played since that day. That jam led into an anthemic “Playing in the Band” led by Anastasio on vocals. Weir then once again rejoined for the encore, adding to a cover of “Quinn the Eskimo.”
Phish return to Nashville tonight to wrap up their run.
