Phish played their second of two shows at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Alpharetta, GA’s Encore Park last night, treating fans to a straightforward performance that again featured some choice highlights of jamming, most notably in the second set.

The night kicked off with a rare first-set opener in “Mike’s Song,” giving the quartet a chance to show off some Mike Gordon-led harmonies and a quick jam before Jon Fishman took the spotlight for his “Ass Handed” vocal solo and subsequent all-band heavy riff. Gordon and his thumping bass then ushered the group into “Weekapaug Groove,” which featured a solid extended guitar solo from Trey Anastasio. “Waiting All Night” then brought the energy down to a simmer with some more slinky guitar before Anastasio jumped into a satisfying “Sample in a Jar.” “Bathtub Gin” then featured the usual piano flourishes from Page McConnell and a nice climax that preceded the quick shuffle of “Rift.” The ensuing “Stash” brought the group into some fiery jazz territory led by scorching guitar from Anastasio, while “Funky Bitch” provided space for a strong keyboard solo from McConnell. The set then closed out with the instrumental “Your Pet Cat” and a euphoric “Character Zero.”

“Run Like an Antelope” go the second set off to a bouncy start and extended past its climax before the band took up “Fuego,” which was highlighted by some frantic guitar before Anastasio led the way into the fast-paced rager “Runaway Jim.” The always-welcome Led Zeppelin cover “No Quarter” followed before the band launched into a “Simple” that brought things down to a quiet jam before picking back up and extending to various segments of solid jamming led by Anastasio’s alternately screaming and crunchy guitar. “46 Days” quickly turned into a cover of Allen Toussaint’s “Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley” that featured an all-band vocal jam that ultimately led back into “46 Days” to close out the set. The band later returned to the stage for a two-song encore of the reggae-infused “Makisupa Policeman” and the Anastasio-led “First Tube.”
